The Department of Political Sciences of Sapienza University of Rome (DSP) and the Institute of International Legal Studies of the National Research Council (ISGI-CNR) constitute the National Point of Contact (NPOC) of the ECSL.
The ECSL Italian NPOC was first created as the Italian Centre for Space Law, dated 27 April 1992. In 2001, the Institute for International Legal Studies (Istituto di Studi Giuridici Internazionali-ISGI) of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) took over the role of Italian NPOC at the initiative of the ISGI founding director, Prof. Sergio Marchisio. Progressively, the Italian NPOC has consolidated its activities with the Department of Political Sciences (DSP) of Sapienza University of Rome.
The main objective is promoting and spreading the knowledge of Space Law in Italy.
To reach this objective, the NPOC:
The Department of Law of the University of Genoa (DDG), through the Genoa Institute of International, European and Maritime Law, constitutes the Italian National Sub-Point of Contact (NSPOC) of the ECSL.

The NSPOC is managed by a team composed of Professors at the Genoa Institute, namely Francesco Munari (Full Professor of European Union Law), Lorenzo Schiano di Pepe (Full Professor of European Union Law), Maria Elena De Maestri (Assistant Professor of International Law).

The European Centre for Space Law (ECSL), established in 1989 under the auspices of the European Space Agency (ESA), promotes the knowledge of Space Law for the benefit of lawyers, students and professionals. The objectives, structure and functions of the Center are regulated by the ECSL Charter.

The Italian members of the ECSL form the Italian National Section and are automatically part of the Italian NPOC. Italian members of the ECSL are natural and legal persons of Italian nationality and persons who have a permanent residence in Italy or an affiliation with Italian entities (universities, research centres, institutions operating in the space sector).
