The book is in line of continuity with the author’s previous contributions on space law and his long-standing engagement in outer space legal studies and professional/diplomatic experiences.
Space law has profoundly evolved in last years to reflect the development of space applications. There is an ongoing trend of space commercialization, which enables the private sector to provide goods and services of commercial value. Forthcoming missions are opening new horizons for humanity in outer space, from the utilization of space natural resources to plans for a permanent human presence on celestial bodies. New space economy initiatives multiply, while there is a need for a safe, secure and sustainable outer space for peaceful purposes. In parallel, States are committed to implement the norms, rules, guidelines and good practices established to promote the new uses of space.

In his career, Professor Marchisio has dealt with many different shades in the realm of international law, but space law has been the adventure of a lifetime. After many years of teaching and engagement in multilateral institutions dealing with outer space, time was ripe to synthesize the basic features of the law of outer space activities, to be put at the service of enthusiast young students and practitioners and stimulate the next generations of space lawyers.
The author has been a witness and direct contributor in many of such developments.
The author has been a witness and direct contributor in many of such developments, thanks to his engagement as delegate to the COPUOS Legal Sub-Committee which he chaired in 2004-2006 and the Working Group on Long-term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities, as well as, to mention a few of them, the EU proposal for an International Code of Conduct on outer space activities (ICoC), the Group of Governmental Experts on Transparency and Confidence-Building Measures in space (TCBMs, UNGA Resolution 65/68), the Group on the Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space (PAROS, UNGA Resolution 72/250) and the UNIDROIT negotiations on the Space Assets Protocol.
In the volume, he records his appreciation for the team of researchers, Gianfranco Nucera, Pierfrancesco Breccia, Anne-Sophie Martin, Alessandra Matteis and Ludovica Ciarravano, efficiently engaged in a cooperative spirit in the activities of the OSL Team Sapienza.
