The 2024 IAC Milan, under its motto Responsible Space for Sustainability, gives particular prominence to legal matters, aware that the consolidation of a regulatory framework, including international standards and best practices, that is up-to-date with the latest developments and emerging needs of space activities and operators, will further contribute to preserving outer space and ensuring future generations can continue to benefit from it.
Several technical sessions will address legal and regulatory issues related to the law of space activities, including space debris detection, mitigation and removal, cyber security, artificial intelligence, commercial spaceflight, and space launches from celestial bodies.
Log in to the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) website and check out the complete list of technical sessions https://www.iafastro.org/events/iac/international-astronautical-congress-2024/technical-programme/
Every year, the International Institute of Space Law (IISL), an independent non-governmental organisation fostering the development of space law, holds its annual Colloquium on the Law of Outer Space at the IAC, in cooperation with the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) and the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA). This year’s theme is rather broad as it aims to analyse how the latest technological developments, such as in the security, cyber, artificial intelligence, or disruptive NewSpace activities fields, influence the existing regulatory framework of space activities and the further development of space law.
At the IAC, it will be possible to attend the world finals of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition, a world competition organised annually by IISL since 1992 in which students from five continents confront each other on a hypothetical space law case through the presentation of written and oral arguments.
